A block of wood kept on a table applies a thrust of 49 N on the table top. The dimensions of the wooden block are 40 cm × 20 cm × 10 cm. Calculate the pressure exerted by the wooden block if it is made to lie on the table top with its sides of dimensions (a) 20 cm × 10 cm and (b) 40 cm × 20 cm.

As we know pressure is calculated as ratio of force to area.

Pressure = Force / Area

(a) 20 cm × 10 cm

Pressure = Force / Area

Pressure = 49 / (0.2×0.1)

Pressure = 49 / 0.02

Pressure = 2450 Pa

(b) 40 cm × 20 cm

Pressure = Force / Area

Pressure = 49 / (0.4×0.2)

Pressure = 49 / 0.08

Pressure = 612.5 Pa
