Given:

A block of wood of volume 25 cm3 floats on water with 20 cm3 of its volume immersed.

To find:

  • Density of block
  • Weight of block

Calculation:

Let density of block be \sigma and density of water be \rho:

 \sf \therefore \:  \dfrac{V_{inside}}{V_{total}}  =  \dfrac{ \sigma}{ \rho}

 \sf \implies \:  \dfrac{20}{25}  =  \dfrac{ \sigma}{ 1}

 \sf \implies \:  \sigma =  \dfrac{20}{25}

 \sf \implies \:  \sigma =  \dfrac{4}{5}

 \sf \implies \:  \sigma = 0.8

So, density of block is 0.8 g/cc.

 \sf \implies \:  weight = mass \times g

 \sf \implies \:  weight = (V_{total}\times  \sigma )\times g

 \sf \implies \:  weight = \dfrac{25}{ {100}^{3}  } \times 800 \times 10

 \sf \implies \:  weight = 0.2 \: N

So, weight of body is 0.2 N.
