a block of wood weigh 4neutons is placed on a horizontal table. It's when pulled by means of spring balance attached to one of its ends. The block just begin to move when The spring balance record a horizontal force of 2.5 neuton. what is The coefficient of static friction? what is the frictional force when a force of 2 neuton is recorded by the spring balance?

Answer:

Given: weight of block = 4 N.

The block just begins to move when a force of 2.5 N is applied to the block.

To find: The frictional force when the block is applied by a force of 2 N.

Concept: Friction can be of 2 types:

1. Static friction/Limiting friction: It is observed when body is stationary. This friction goes on increasing with increase in force until the critical force is reached.

2. Dynamic force: It is observed when the body starts moving. It is lesser in magnitude than static friction.

Calculation: In this case, the critical force is 2.5 N.

But if a force of 2 N is applied, the friction force will also be 2N (static friction) so as to prevent the object from moving.

Conclusion: Frictional force will be 2N.
