Buoyant force is always upward and weight of the body is always downward. In air its weight is 4N and let the buoyant force be x which reduces the actual weight ie 4N. So the apparent weight becomes 4 --x. This is given as 3N. By equating 4 -- x = 3 we have to solve it to get x, the unknown buoyant force. Solving we get x = 4 --3 = 1 N.

Required Buoyant force = 1 N
