time taken by the boat to cover the distance downstream = 1/2 hour
time taken by the boat to cover the distance upstream = 1 hour
To Find:
the velocity of the current
Solution:
let the speed of the boat be a and the speed of the current be b
then, the downstream speed of the boat = a + b
the upstream speed = a - b
we know that speed = distance/time
⇒ 2/(a + b) = 1/2
a + b = 4 ...(1)
and, 2/(a - b) = 1
a - b = 2 ...(2)
adding (1) and (2), we get-
a + b + a - b = 4 + 2
2a = 6
a = 3
⇒ b = 4 - 3 = 1
Thus, the velocity of the current is 1 kmph.
