and speed of stream be y km/hr

speed of boat in upsteam is (x-y) km / hr

speed of boat in downsteam is (x+y) km/hr

time=distance/speed

7=32/x-y+ 36/x+y

9=40/x-y+48/x+y

let 1/x-y= a; 1/x+y=b

7=32a+36b. ...1

9=40a+ 48b......2

32a=7-36b

a=7-36b/32....3

40(7-36b/32) + 48b=9

35-180b+192b=36

12b=1

b=1/12

a=7-36(1/12)/32

a=1/8

x-y=12

x+y=8
