A boat covers a certain distance upstream in 10 hours and it covers the same distance downstream in 6 hours. If the speed of the stream is 4 km/hr, find the speed of the boat in still water

since distance = speed × time, we have

(x+4)6=(x−4)10

=> (x + 4)3=(x - 4)5

> 3x + 12 = 5x-20

=> 5x-3x=20-12

=> 2x=8

=> x=4
