SOLUTION :-

Let the speed of the boat in still water be x.

Given that,

Speed of the stream = 3 km/h

Downstream :-

Speed downstream = ( x + 3 ) km/h

Time taken = 5 h

Distance between 2 ports = 5 ( x + 3 ) km

Upstream :-

Speed upstream = ( x - 3 ) km/h

Time taken = 8 h

Distance between 2 ports = 8 ( x - 3 ) km

According to the question,

\longrightarrow\sf 5(x+3)=8(x-3) \\\\\longrightarrow 5x+15 = 8x-24 \\\\\longrightarrow 5x-8x = -24-15 \\\\\longrightarrow -3x = -39 \\\\\longrightarrow \bf x = 13

Speed of the boat in still water = 13 km/h
