Step-by-step explanation:

let speed of water in still water be 'x'

speed of current be ' y'

then upstream can be taken as x-y

( because upstream means flowing against the current of water)

and downstream as x+y

( alone the direction of current)

then Case 1:( upstream)

d= 40km

t= 8hrs

speed= x-y

therefore

S= d/t

i.e x-y =40/8

x-y = 5........(i)

Case 2:( downstream)

d= 36km

t= 6hrs

s= x+y

so

x+y = 36/6

x+y = 6........(ii)

solving (i) and (ii)

x+y=6

x-y=5 ( adding both the equations vertically)

i.e 2x= 11

x= 11/2= 5.5 km/hr

x is the speed of boat in still water

so the required answer is 5.5 km/hr

Hope it helps you
