Upstream Speed = 40/8 (km/hr) = 5 km/hr
Downstream Speed = 49/7 (km/hr) = 7 km/hr
Boat speed =?
Downstream speed = Boat speed +Water Speed
Upstream speed = Boat speed - Water speed
Note : Always Boat speed would be greater than water speed, so that boat could move forward. If water speed is greater than Boat speed boat moves in reverse direction.
By using formula
7 = Boat speed + Water speed
5 = Boat speed - Water speed
12= (2) Boat speed
Boat speed = 6 km/hr
