A boat goes downstream and covers the
distance between two ports in 4 hours. It
covers the same distance in 6 hours when it
goes upstream. If speed of boat is 5 km/h,
then find the speed of water.

Let the speed of water be x

speed while going downstream=speed of boat+speed of water

                                                    =5+x

time taken to go downstream   =4 hrs

distance travelled                       =speed*time taken

                                                    =(5+x)*4

                                                    =20+4x                                        speed while going upstream=speed of boat-speed of water

 =5-x

time taken to go downstream   =6 hrs

distance travelled                       =speed*time taken

 =(5-x)*6

                                                    =30-6x

Since distance travelled is same in both cases

20+4x =30-6x

6x+4x=30-20

10x=10

x=10/10

x=1

speed of water=1 km/h

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

gn

time covered downstream = 4 hours

time covered in upstream = 6 hours

the speed of the boat is 5 km/h

solution

downstream

distance covered in one hour = 1(x+ 5)

distance covered in 4 hours = 4(x+2)

upstream

distance covered in one hour = 1(x-5)

distance covered in 6 hours = 6(x-5)

(the distance covered in 4 hours = the distance covered in 6 hours )

(x+2)4=(x−2)5

=> 44+8=5x−10

=> x=18 km/hr.
