Given : A boat has speed of 12 m/s  in still water.

This boat crosses a river moving at 5 m/s at right angle to motion of boat.

To Find : speed of boat in water

Solution:

Speed of  boat in still water = 5 m/s

Speed of stream = 12 m/s

Both are perpendicular to each other

Hence resultant magnitude of speed  = √5² + 12²

= √25 + 144

= √169

= 13

resultant magnitude of speed  is 13 m/s

Addition Info:

Direction wrt  to stream  = tan⁻¹(12/5) ≈  67.38°

Resultant direction of boat wrt  to stream is  67.38°

Explanation:

Speed of boat in still water = 5 m/s

Speed of stream = 12 m/s

Both are perpendicular to each other

Hence resultant magnitude of speed 12² √5² +

= √25 +144

= √169
