Given : A boat in still water has a speed of 8.5 m/s. The boat is moving upstream in a river with flow speed of  5 m/s

To find :  ground speed of boat.

Solution:

Boat speed in still water  =  8.5 m/s

Flow Speed = 5 m/s

Boat speed upstream = Boat Speed in still water - Flow speed

=> Boat speed upstream =     8.5 -  5

=>   Boat speed upstream   = 3.5 m/s

Boat speed upstream  is relative to ground

Hence ground speed of boat. = 3.5 m/s
