Mass of boat, M₁ = 40 kg

Mass of Dog, M₂ = 4 kg

Velocity of dog, V₂ = 10 m/s

Velocity of boat, V₁= x

=> As per the law of conservation of linear momentum, momentum of boat is equal to the momentum of dog.  Thus,

M₁V₁=M₂V₂

40 * V₁ = 4 * 10

V1 = 4 * 10 / 40

= 40 / 40

= 1 m/s

Thus, the velocity of the boat is 1 m/s.
