A boat running downstream covers a distance of 40 km in 5 hrs and for
covering the same distance upstream it takes 10 hrs. What is the speed
of the stream?​

While going downstream:

40/(B+C) = 4, or

40 = 4B + 4C,

10 = B + C, or

B = 10-C …(1)

While going upstream:

40/(B-C) = 8, or

40 = 8B - 8C, or

5 = B - C, or

B = 5+C …(2)

Equate (1) and (2)

10-C = 5+C

2C = 5, or

C = 2.5 km/hr.

B = 5+2.5 = 7.5 km/hr.

The speed of the boat in still water is 7.5 km/hr.
