A boat sailing through a river moved eastward for 5km, then cross river by moving 3km southward. On reaching the other side it moved westward through 1km and reached the jetty. Find the distance covered and displacement of the boat.​

Distance = (5 + 3 + 1) Km

               = 9 Km

Displacement = AD

In triangle ADE

AE 4Km

ED 3Km

Apply Pythagoras

AD² = AE² + ED²

AD = √ AE² + ED²

AD = √ 4² + 3²

AD = √16 + 9

AD = √ 25

AD = 5

AD = 5Km

Displacement = 5Km
