Given : a boat takes 0.5 hours more to travel a distance of 45 km upstream then to travel the same distance downstream

the speed of the boat in still water is 4 times the speed of the stream,

To Find :  what time it will take to cover a distance of 72 km downstream

Solution:

Speed of stream = S km/hr

Speed of Boat in Still water = 4S km/hr

Speed of Boat upstream = 4S - S = 3S km/hr

Speed of Boat downstream = 4S + S = 5S km/hr

Time taken for 45 km for upstream ad down stream

45/3S  = 15/S  and 45/5S = 9/S

15/S - 9/S = 0.5

=> 6/S = 0.5

=> S = 12

Speed of Boat downstream = 5 * 12 = 60 km/hr

Distance = 72 km

Time taken == 72/60  = 1.2 hrs
