let the speed of boat and the water current is x and y km/hr respectively.

so,

  • For Upstream ,

speed = (x-y) km/hr

distance = 40 km

Time = 40/(x-y) hr ------------(1)

  • For Downstream,

speed =(x+y) km/hr

distance = 40 km

Time = 40 /(x+y) hr -------------(2)

From (1) and (2) ,

By given condition,

40/(x-y)= 40 /(x+y) + 1
