Let speed of boat be x and speed of river be y and D be the distance covered.

As we know, distance/speed = time.

Thus,

D/(x+y) =2 {downstream}

D/(x-y) = 4 {upstream}

=> 2x + 2y = 4x - 4y

=> 4x - 2x = 2y + 4y

=> 2x = 6y

=> x/y = 3/1

Thus required ratio is 3:1.
