let the speed I'm still water be x and in stream be y

speed = distance / TIME

time = distance / speed

for speed in upstream = [x-y]

for down stream = [x+y]

BY FIRST CONDITION

time = dist/speed

24/[x+y] + 15/[x-y] = 6 ......1

BY SECOND CONDITION

48/x+y + 36/x-y = 13 .....2

substitute x+y = m and x-y = n

therefore

24m + 15n = 6 ... 1

46m + 36n = 13 ....2

find value of m and n and resubstitute to get the value of x and y
