Let us consider the speed of the boat as x\ km/h

And let the speed of the stream be y \ km/h

Formulas:-

  • Upstream = (x - y) km/h
  • Downstream = (x + y) km/h

Given:-

  • Distance covered = 48 km
  • Time for downstream = 8h
  • Time for upstream = 12h

Calculations:-

Speed of boat downstream,

 =  \frac{48km}{8h}  \\  = 6km {h}^{ - 1}

Speed of boat upstream,

 =  \frac{48km}{12h}  \\  = 4km {h}^{ - 1}

To Find:-

  • Speed of boat in still water
  • Speed of stream

Using the formulas,

x - y = 4 ---(i)

x + y = 6 ---(ii)

Adding (I) and (ii)

2x = 10

x = 5

Putting the value of x in (i)

5 - y = 4

y = 1

Final Answer:-

Speed of the boat in still water (x) = 4km/hr

Speed of the stream (y) = 1km/h
