A boat travels 30 km upstream in 5 hrs and 28 km downstream in 4 hirs. Find the speed of the
boat in still water and speed of the water current.

let us assume the speed of the boat in still water as 'B' and the river as 'R'..

now while going upstream...

the effective speed would be (B-R) as the boat and the water is going opposite ways..

and that we can calculate as 30/5 ..

so B-R=6..........(1).

similarly while going downstream..

the equation will be..

B+R=7.........(2)..

adding both the equations we get 2B as 13..

so B comes 6.5...

and by putting B in any of the previous equations we get R as 0.5..
