A boat travels 6.3 km downstream in 9 minutes and 5.4 km upstream in the same time. what is the speed of the boat in still water ?

time =9 minutes
let speed of boat in still water be x
and speed of stream be y
so, in downstream time=9=6.3/x+y
or, 9x+9y=6.3.....................1
so, in upstream time=9=5.4/x-y
or, 9x-9y=5.4.....................2

adding 1 and 2 , we get
18x=11.7
so, x=11.7/18=0.65 km/minute
so, speed of boat in still water
=0.65×60 kmph =39kmph
