a body can have 0 average velocity but not 0 average speed why ?

velocity is defined by displacement/time as displacement is a vector quantity it can be 0 but speed depends upon distance so its additive

because if the body comes back to its initial position then it will have zero average velocity but it is not the case in speed because speed is distance/time and distance can never be zero.
