Average speed is distance covered by time taken.
Whereas average velocity is displacement of the body over time taken.
Since displacement is a vector quantity, it has have magnitude 0 (zero). But distance is scalar, it can never be zero (except when object is at the initial point).
Therefore, avg. velocity can be zero but avg. speed can never be zero.
