average velocity= total displacement travel /total time taken

where as

average speed = total distance travel/ total time taken

lets take an example
when a student goes to school and then come back to its starting position.
therefore it travels some but it's displacement is zero..

from the above we get

average velocity = 0/time
= 0
but
avg. speed = distance /time
≠0

As we know that displacement is the shortest path so it can be zero in some cases so av velocity is total displacement divided by total time so it can be zero
But as distance cannot be zero so av speed also cannot be zero
