The temperature of the surrounding is 28.3°c.

Given,

A body cools down from 60c to 50c in 5 minutes and 40c in another 8 minutes.

To Find,

The temperature of the surroundings.

Solution,

Using Newton's law of cooling

(T₁-T₂)/α = t[(T₁+T₂)/2-Ts]

Where,

t = 5 minutes, T₁ = 60c, T₂ = 50c, and Ts is the temperature pf the surroundings

Now,

10/α = 5(55-Ts)----(i)

Now, for the second case

t = 8 minutes, T₁ = 50, T₂ = 40c

10/α = 8(45-Ts)----(ii)

divide (i) and (ii)

8(45-Ts) = 5(55-Ts)

360-8Ts = 275-5Ts

85 = 3Ts

Ts = 85/3 = 28.3°c

Hence, the temperature of the surrounding is 28.3°c.
