speed=40 kmh ;30kmh
distance= 20km ;20km
time=d/s= 40+30/20+20
=70/40=1.75kmh

ishansoni: what u did bro? after distance
ishansoni: No it is not like that

The total distance which is given to us during the first part = 20 km
The speed by which it travels for the first path = 40 km/hr
Now you can calculate the time

Time = Distance/Speed
Therefore t1= 20/40 = 1/2 hr

The total distance which is given to us during the second part = 20 km
The speed which is given to us during the second part = 30 km/hr

Same here find the time:
t2= Distance/Speed
20/30= 2/3 km/hr

Now for calculating average speed : Total Distance/ Total time Taken

 As we know the total distance is 20+20 = 40km
While the time is = t1+t2= 1/2 +2/3
solving the time part first: 1/2+2/3

7/6 hr (taking 6 as the LCM)

Now substitute the values = 40/7/6
40*6/7 (as 6 was below the denominator we multiplied  it with the top)
= 240/7= 34.28 km/hr
