we know
V= U + at
V is the final speed
U is the initial speed
a is the acceleration
t is time.
here U =0 { as it starts from rest}
t= 1 sec
a=g= 32 ft/ sec^2
so, V= 0+ 32×1 ft/sec
= 32 ft/ sec
thus the speed after 1st second is 32 ft/sec = 9.76 m/ sec { as 1 meter= 3.28 ft}

as for free fall
v=gt given g=32ft/sec and t=1 sec
thus v = 32 x 1
32 ft/sec
