A body goes from A to B with a velocity of 40 m/s and comes back from B to A with a velocity of 60 m/s. What is the (i) average velocity during the whole journey and (ii) average speed during the whole journey?

Actually, the word 'velocity' in the question should have been replaced by speed to correctly solve the question.

Let 'x' be the distance. Then, the time taken for the outbound journey equals x/30 and the time taken for the inbound journey equals x/20. Total time taken = 5x/60 and the total distance travelled equals 2x. So, average speed equals (2x)/(5x/60) which is equal to 24 M/S.
