thus

S(height) = ut + 1/2*a*t^2
3.4 = 0 + 1/2*9.8*t^2
3.4 = 4.9*t^2
or t^2 = 3.4/4.9
= 34/49
t = √34/7
= 5.83/7
= 0.83 (approx.)
