Solution :

Given :-

A body is moving along a circular path of radius 14m

To Find :-

Distance travelled and displacement of the body after 2.5 rounds.

Concept :-

Distance is defined as actual length of path covered by body whereas displacement is defined as the shortest distance b/w initial and final position of whole journey.

Displacement can be zero but distance can't be zero.

Calculation :-

Distance = 2πR × 2.5

✏ Distance = 2 × 3.14 × 14 × 2.5

✏ Distance = 219.8m

Displacement = 2R

✒ Displacement = 2 × 14

✒ Displacement = 28m

Additional information :-

  • Distance is a scalar quantity.
  • Displacement is a vector quantity.

Answer:

Distance is the actual path covered by a body and it is a scalar quantity which can be zero. Whereas, displacement is the shortest distance covered by a body and is a vector quantity. Displacement of a body can't be zero.

_________________________________________________

Formula for distance of the circular path is 2\pi r.

Formula for the displacement of the body is 2r.

_________________________________________________

Calculation :

Radius of circular path = 14 m

Number of rounds = 2.5

Distance \: covered \: in \: 1 \: round = 2 \pi(14) \\ Distance \: covered \: in \: 2.5 \: rounds = 2\pi(14) \times 2.5 \\ Distance \: covered \: in \: 2.5 \: rounds = 219.8m

And,

Displacement \:  = 2(r) \\ Displacement \:  = 2(14) \\ Displacement \:  = 28m

Therefore, the distance covered along the circular path is 219.8m and the displacement is 28m.
