When a body is thrown vertically upwards it is a projectile and it covers a horizontal range which is zero. It is clear from the definition of projectile motion that when a body is thrown obliquely here the Earth surface it moves along a curved path and after the body is thrown the motion of the body is controlled by the gravity. Although the body is thrown upward and it also not covered a curved path it is considered a projectile motion because after it is thrown its motion is completely controlled by the gravity and hence it should be considered as projectile motion.
