This is testing the concept of perpendicular vectors.

On ours case the perpendicular vectors are in form of speed.

They form a right angled triangle with height 40m/s and length or rather base = 30m/s

The resultant velocity is the hypotenuse.

Hypotenuse is given by Pythagoras theorem.

H² = 40² + 30² = 2500

H = √2500 = 50

The resultant velocity is 50m/s
