so when a body is thrown upwards with some velocity gravity applies some force on it due to which its acceleration is reduced and there is negative acceleration( retardation) and at one point the velocity becomes zero this point in the graph will be shown as retardation then the body comes down and again gravity applies its force increasing its acceleration due to which there is acceleration.
