When a body is immersed in water,
it displaces water equal to it's volume. A liquid exerts pressure in all directions. The sideways force by the liquid get cancelled as they are equal and opposite and pressure a point is same in all directions. Now there are two forces which on the body, from top and bottom. Pressure depends on depth at a point from the free surface, so as the height from the bottom of the body to the free surface is higher than the top of body to free surface, so force exerted on bottom of body is higher than the force exerted on the top.
Therefore a net force acts in the upward direction which is called upthrust or buoyant force and it is due to this force a boy weigh less in Water than in air.
