Acceleration and velocity are vectors. If they point in different directions the object must be slowing down. Velocity is increasing acceleration must be positive and if velocity is decreasing acceleration must be negative.

when a body go in the opposite direction then it is said to be negative acceleration but there is no term like negative speed as speed can never be negative .
