Given:

A body moves towards North for 5 m then takes sharp left turn and moves for another 12 m.

To find:

Average velocity if time taken is 5 sec ?

Calculation:

First of all, let's find the displacement :

Using Pythagoras' Theorem:

d =  \sqrt{ {5}^{2}  +  {12}^{2} }  =  \sqrt{169}  = 13 \: m

Now, average velocity will be :

 \therefore \: avg. \: v =  \dfrac{d}{t}

 \implies\: avg. \: v =  \dfrac{13}{5}

 \implies\: avg. \: v = 2.6 \: m {s }^{ - 1}

So, average velocity is 2.6 m/s.

by using Pythagoras theorem,

d = √[(5)² + (12)²]

= √(25 + 144)

= √169

= 13 m

then,

Average velocity = d/t

= 13/5

= 2.6 m/s
