A body of mass 30 kg at one end and another of 50 kg at the other end of a string passing over a frictionless pulley are suspended as shown in the figure. What is the acceleration of this system? [take g = 10 m/s²]
(A) 8 m/s²
(B) 6 m/s²
(C) 2.5 m/s²
(D) 2 m/s²

Hey there !

Solution:

Acceleration = Net External Force / Sum of Masses

Net External Force = M₁g + M₂g

=> M₁g = 2 * -10 = -20 N

=> M₂g = 3 * 10 = 30 N

Sum of Masses = 2 + 3 = 5 kg

=> Acceleration = M₁g + M₂g / M₁ + M₂

=> Acceleration = -20 N + 30 N / 3 + 2

=> Acceleration = 10 N / 5 Kg = 2 m/s²

Hence Option ( d ) is correct.

Hope my answer helped !
