A body of mass 4m lying in xy plane at rest. It suddenly explodes into 3 pieces each of mass m move perpendicular to each other with equal speeds v . The total K.E. generated due to explosion is

By law of conservation of momentum 

magnitude of the momentum  of heavier  piece of mass 2 m 

Magnitude of the vector sum of  momentum  of each piece of mass m 

2m v' = √ (mv)² + (mv)²

2m v' = √2 mv 

2 v' = √2 v 

v' = v /√2

KE generated 

KE = 1/2 mv² + 1/2 mv² + 1/2 (2m) (v')² 

KE = 1/2 ( mv²  + mv² + 2m (v)²/ 2 ) 

KE = 1/2 (3 mv²)

KE = 3/2 mv²
