A body of mass 5 kg falls from a height of 10m to 4m calculate the loss in potential energy of the body, and the total energy possessed by the body at any instant.

P.E =mgh

H =10_4=6m

m=5kg

P.E = 5× 10×4

P.E= 200J ---- this is loss in P.E

Loss in P.E = Gain in K.E

200 =200

So total energy = P.E + K.E

Total energy = 200 +200=400J

Total energy = mgh
here ' h' is initial hieght.
therefore total energy = 5 × 10 × 10
= 500 j : at any instant
loss of potential energy = mg(h - h*)
h : initial height
h*: final height
therefore ; 5 × 10 ( 10 - 4 )
=300 j
this is loss in potential energy
