Given :

• A body starts to slide over a horizontal surface with an initial velocity of 2 m/s.

• Due to friction, its velocity decreases at the rate of 1 m/s².

To find :

• The time the body will take to stop

Solution :

We have,

Initial velocity = 2 m/s

Final velocity = 0 m/s

Acceleration = - 1 m/s²

Here, we shall use the first equation of motion to find the time the body will take to stop.

First equation of motion :-

  • v = u + at

where,

• v denotes the final velocity

• u denotes the initial velocity

• a denotes the acceleration

• t denotes the time

Substituting the given values :-

⟶ 0 = 2 + (- 1(t))

⟶ 0 - 2 = - t

⟶ - 2 = - t

⟶ 2 = t

Therefore, the body will take 2 seconds to stop.
