total mass= 16 kg

mass of piece 1 = 4kg

Velocity of piece 1 = ?

mass of piece 2 = 12kg

Velocity of piece 2 = 4m/s

Momentum of piece 2 = 12x4 kg m/s

By momentum conservation,

Momentum of piece 2 = momentum of piece 1

12 ×4 = 4 × v

v = 12 m/s

Velocity of piece 1 = 12m/s

KE of piece 1 = ½ × 4 × 12² joule = 288 joule (ans)
