If he sells 250 books at 10% profit and rest at 5% loss and makes an overall profit of \frac{10}{3}% on the transaction, then the total no.of copies sold by him will be 450.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the total no. of copies of books sold by the bookseller be “x”.

C.P. of each book = $60

Profit earned on the complete transaction = \frac{10}{3}%

It is also given that he sells 250 copies at a profit of 10% and rest of the copies i.e., (x-250) copies at a loss of 5%.

Required formula:

S.P. = C.P * [(100±Por L)/100]

According to the question we can write the equation for the selling price of each transaction as,

[250*60 * {(100+10)/100}] + [(x-250)*60*{(100-5)/100}] = [x*60*{(100+10/3)/100}]

⇒ [250*60 * {110/100}] + [(x-250)*60*{95/100}] = [x*60*{310/300}]

⇒ [16500] + [(x-250)*3*19] = [x*62]

⇒ 16500 + 57x – 14250 = 62x

⇒ 2250 = 62x – 57x

⇒ 5x = 2250

x = 450

Thus, the total no.of copies sold by the bookseller is 450.
