Given : A bought a number of articles for Rs. 325 and sold all except 5 at a profit of Rs. 3 per article . with the total  amount received he could buy 31 more articles than before

To find : the cost per article?

Solution:

Let say Cost Per article   = C

and let say number of articles bought initially  = N

=> CN  = 325

sold all except 5 at a profit of Rs. 3 per article

=> Selling Price = (C + 3)(N - 5)

he could buy 31 more articles than before

=>  he could buy  = N + 31

Cost of N + 31  =  C(N + 31)

C(N + 31)  = (C + 3)(N - 5)

=> CN + 31C = CN  -5C + 3N - 15

=> 36C   = 3N - 15

=> 12C = N - 5

=> N = 12C + 5

CN  = 325

=> C( 12C + 5) = 325

=> 12C²  + 5C = 325

=> 12C² + 5C - 325 = 0

=> 12C²  - 60C +  65C - 325 = 0

=> 12C(C - 5) + 65(C - 5)  = 0

=> (12C + 65) (C - 5) = 0

=> C = 5     ( as Cost can not be - ve)

Cost Per article = Rs 5
