Looking at other people’s answers I propose a different way of working it out as I suspect you might not be good at dividing with big numbers.

You start with 24 children and you are going to give them 5 sweets each, but before you can hand it out, 4 end up going home early.

Since those four would have gotten 5 sweets each we know the total now left over is 20,

4 * 5 = 20

and since they left we now only have 20 children left.

24 - 4 = 20

Now since we have 20 left over sweets we will give one sweet to each child that is left.

20 / 20 = 1

This means that the remaining 20 children get 6 sweets because they initially got 5 and is now getting 1 extra

5 + 1 = 6

and the 4 children that ran off get 0.
