Given :  A box of fruit contains twice as many apples as pears.

Christy and Lily divided them up so that Christy had twice as many pieces of fruit as Lily.

To Find : Which one of the following  statements is always true?

(A) Christy took at least one pear.

(B) Christy took twice as many apples as pears.

(C) Christy took twice as many apples as Lily.

(D) Christy took as many apples as Lily got pears.

(E) Christy took as many pears as Lily got apples.

Solution:

 A box of fruit contains twice as many apples as pears.

Let say Pears  = X

=> Apples  =  2X

Total fruits = X + 2X  = 3X

Christy and Lily divided them up so that Christy had twice as many pieces of fruit as Lily

=> Let say Lilly has  fruits = Y

then  Christy = 2Y

=> Total = Y + 2Y  = 3Y

3Y = 3X

=> Y = X

Hence Lilly has  fruits = X

and   Christy = 2X

Let say Lilly  takes    =   P   Pears

=>  Lilly takes  =   X - P  apples    as Lilly has to take X fruits.

Christ takes  =  X - P   pears   as  there are   total  X pears

Christy Take  =   2X - (X - P)  = X +  P  Apples

Christ takes  =  X - P   pears

Lilly takes  =   X - P  apples

Christy took as many pears as Lily got apples

This is always True
