Answer:

Apart from the force of 25 N and 35 N exerted by Sanjay and Harish, a force of friction f acts on the box, exerted by the floor. As the box remains at rest, the resultant force on it must be zero by Newton's first law.

It is clear that resultant of the forces applied by the two people is 35 N – 25 N = 10 N, towards the left.

So, the force of friction is towards the right and it's magnitude is 10 N.

The force of friction is towards the right and it's magnitude is 10 N.

What is force of friction give an example?

  • When the hands are rubbed against each other, a force opposing this motion of the hands comes into action.
  • The force resisting the motion is applied in the direction opposite to the direction of motion of the hands is called the frictional force and is responsible to generate heat energy.

What are examples of friction?

  • Driving of a a vehicle on a surface.
  • Applying brakes to stop a moving vehicle.
  • Skating.
  • Walking on the road.
  • Writing on notebook/ blackboard.
  • Flying of aeroplanes.
  • Drilling a nail into wall.
  • Sliding on a garden slide.

According to the question:

  • Apart from the force of 25 N and 35 N exerted by Sanjay and Harish, a force of friction f acts on the box, exerted by the floor.
  • As the box remains at rest, the resultant force on it must be zero by Newton's first law.

It is clear that resultant of the forces applied by the two people is 35 N – 25 N = 10 N, towards the left.

Hence, the force of friction is towards the right and it's magnitude is10 N.
