Given:

Length of the square base =80 cm

Height of the box =1 m 40 cm

To find:

  1. The area of the metal.
  2. The cost of sheet used for making.

Solution:

We have been given that the box is open and the base of the box to be made is of square shape of side a=80cm . The total height of the box is 1m 40cm.

Step 1

Now,

Since the base is square shape hence, the area of the base will be given by

A_{1}=a^{2}

We have, a=80cm =0.8m , Hence,

A_{1} =(0.8)^{2}

A_{1}=0.64m^{2}

Now, the lateral surface of the box will have total 4 sides of length (that is the height of the box) as l=140cm=1.4m and  breadth b=0.8m .

Hence, the area of one side of the box is given as

A_{2}=l × b

And, for all the 4 sides of the box

A_{2} =4 × l × b

Substituting the values, we get

A_{2}=4 × 1.4 × 0.8

A_{2} =4 × 1.12

A_{2} =4.48 m^{2}

Hence,

The total area of the box = area of the base + lateral surface area

Total area A=A_{1} +A_{2}

A=0.64+4.48

A=5.12 m^{2}

Step 2

Now,

We have been given the cost of metal as ₹ 55/m^{2}

Hence,

The rate of metal for a box of area 5.12 m^{2} =55 × 5.12

                                                                      = 281.6 rupees.

Final answer:

Hence, the area of the metal box is 5.12 square meter and the cost of metal sheet for making this box will be ₹ 281.6.
