Solution:

Distance covered by walking = x

Distance covered by running = 4-x

According to question, we get:

$\dfrac{x}{3}+\dfrac{4-x}{5}=1\\\\\dfrac{5x+3(4-x)}{15}=1\\\\5x+12-3x=15\\\\2x+12=15\\\\2x=15-12\\\\2x=3\\\\x=\dfrac{3}{2}=1.5\ km$

Hence, he walk 1.5 km.
